Life, Love, and the Birth of the Digital Flower

Kyusai

Released: 11/30/2004 on DramaFree Records
Total running time 61:22

Syloken's debut album was recorded, mixed and produced by John Thomas between July 2003 and November 2004. The album started as an outlet for recording some of the material from John's' previous band Therogy which had disbanded in 2002. All 13 tracks were recorded at John's apartment in Sherman Oaks California and since Kyusai predates the live band all of the instruments were recorded by John as well. The title comes from the Japanese word "Kyûsai" (salvation).

After the albums release the first live line up of Syloken formed to perform some of the Kyusai material live in May 2005. Though for the most part the band now considers this album to be more of a demo for things to come, a few tracks like "Living in an Empty Egg", " Redemption" and "Time for a New Idea" have found homes in the live set.

1. Time for a New Idea

John Thomas: lyrics and music

We’ve tried narcissism, capitalism,
atheism and ecstasy
We’ve begged forgiveness;
we’ve bribed the witness,
now it’s time for something fresh

It’s time for something new
It’s time for something different
It’s time for something new
It’s time for something different

We’ve sold our souls for money
We’ve sold our souls for power
We’ve sold them just to be a star
We’ve been the best of them
We’ve been the worst of them
To fall somewhere in-between
We’ve been a god
And we’ve been a servant
We’ve been the beggar without a name
But when you sell your soul
Just to be adored
You wind up part of the evil scheme

It’s time for something new
It’s time for something different
It’s time for something new
It’s time for something different’

I’ve been through heaven
And I’ve been through hell
I’ve been though the parts we call earth
But now it’s time for something new
It’s time for something different

2. Fictional Gun

John Thomas: lyrics and music

Shit, I could do that shit anytime
It’s not a question of when
It’s a question of why
You faggots
You’re hated more than maggots
Still protected more than babies
Just to prove that we’re humane

All you prostitutes and dried up rockers
You can all burn in hell
Baby baby God’s on our side
He will protect us from ourselves

Man, I’ve got a plan for you
You look just like a mam
So here’s just what we’ll do
Break out, break yourself apart
Wash your self of sinners
Then baby we might have a start

It’s just a fictional gun
A fictional gun
There’s no bullet loaded
Or pointed at your head
It’s a fictional gun
A fictional gun
No body’s gonna stalk you
Or rape you in your bed
I said that’s right
It’s just a fictional gun

3. Bomb Squad

John Thomas: lyrics and music

There’s nothing spectacular she said
Nothing worth reliving again

So here I am defusing a bomb
The fuse was lit back when we first begun

There’s nothing that feels quite
As real as that first kiss
and nothing that hurts as much
As it hurts to break your heart
But you know what we were told
It’s our minds that do all the work
But we tried that
And now we’re back defusing a bomb

And here I am defusing a bomb
The fuse was lit back when we first begun

And it’s so depressing, it’s so depressing
You’re not resting, you ignite another fuse

And here I am defusing a bomb
The fuse was lit back when we first begun

Roses are red and violence is green
Which one do I cut to shut off this machine

4. Noisy In Here

John Thomas: lyrics and music

the little miracles you do
like painting smiles on top of frowns
I know I am nothing like you
Still I may try to raise people from the ground

(if I sit back) and turn my head inside out
(just relax) stop reading from the middle again
(look up) the ground is no place for my eyes
(suck in) pretend I'm in a photograph

no you don't know what it's like
to be the greatest thing since Jesus Christ
all the people knocking on your door
they want more and more and more

it's so irritating
it's so irritating

(calm down) tell myself I'm sorry
(I'll take it) if it's the only thing you'll give
(just what) is it I'm trying to merit?
(I don't need) blood to stay alive

no you don't know what it's like
to be the greatest thing since Jesus Christ
all the people knocking on your door
they want more and more and more

it's so crowded in here
I'm looking for an empty place to sleep
it's just so noisy in here
I'm looking for a quiet place to think

(if I sit back) and turn my head inside out
(just relax) stop reading from the middle again
(just what) is it I'm trying to merit?
(I don't need) blood to stay alive

no you don't know what it's like
to be the greatest thing since Jesus Christ
all the people knocking on your door
they want more and more and more

...this is not what I asked for

5. The Boy

John Thomas: lyrics and music

have you seen
the new born boy
he looks like an angel
with burning eyes

This boy is something
he's got it going on
there's gold in his heart
and blood on his hands
he's the messiah’s savior
the reincarnation
the golden child from our dominate nation

bow down!
Can't you see who this is!
He's the prophesied child!
Here to save the world!

If you don't like him
you may do as you like
But he can damn you
to burn in his fire
so be careful what you wish for
be careful who you tell
be careful what you do at night
you might just burn in hell

so bow down!
bow down the flag
give in to the dogma
bow down to the boy

it is the only way to be safe..
..in this place..

bow down!
bow down to the flag!
give into the dogma
bow down to the boy!

He's gonna change the world
into his image
change the world
into his image..

6. Living in an Empty Egg

John Thomas: lyrics and music

You walk the line
you walk it everyday
never looking down
or taking the time to see
that you’re walking on eggshells
to expensive to break
but when the world falls apart
it falls from beneath your feet
a death in the family,
a crack in the priceless ground
everything you've ignored
comes crashing in your face

This is the time for everything to fall apart
God puts on his robe, forget the jury, let the judgment start
take a scalpel and cut deep into your heart
you look guilty to me, so let the punishment start

If you look at life like it's an open book
come on pretend you can read and humor me with a look
every story begins and every story must end
then they write a sequel to begin it all again
It's time for you to put down that book and enjoy a picture show
That literature is old and its time to throw it away....

This is the time for everything to fall apart
God puts on his robe, throw the jury away and let the judgment start
Take a scalpel put it in your chest see if you have a heart
You look guilty to me so let the punishment start

You have to get, you have to get over it

7. Mannequin

John Thomas: lyrics and music

When I open my eyes to see the sun
hoping to find another human being
but I see none
only mannequins kissing mannequins
what has the world become?
I'm not a mannequin
How lucky I am to have a real kiss
and a wooden door to hang your picture on
how lucky I am to have a mannequin
plastic pearls and paperclips and laughs
and a pretty song from a windup doll
we danced all night under a paper moon
and the electronic birds sang the harmony

8. Fools Philosophy

John Thomas: lyrics and music

Have you ever been pushed down
just to find you’re laying in a pile of shit
all the faces are laughing at you
and a little voice tells you to forgive
it says these people know not what they do
they’re not as bright as me and you
so you lift up your eyes to be kicked again
and the woman with the evil grin says...

Love, it's a fool's philosophy
Love, it's a fool's philosophy
Love, it's a fool's philosophy
And you must be a fool to believe in it

Have you ever had a Saturday
where instead of resting you were digging graves
while the man in the suit who keeps half your pay
is drinking from a coconut on a holiday
a bullet in his eye could make you satisfied
but you feel nothing while you watch him die
there is a price for life that we have to pay
even Jesus Christ worked on Christmas Day

Because Love, It's a fools philosophy
Love, it's a fool's philosophy
Love, it's a fool's philosophy
And you must be a fool to believe in it

Love, it's a fool's philosophy
Love, it's a fool's philosophy
Love, it's a fool's philosophy
And you must be a fool to believe in it

I'm as much a sinner as I am a saint
so I don't slam doors or lodge complaints
I take the best of life and save the rest for spice
I may be a fool but I'm satisfied

Love, it's a fool's philosophy
Love, it's a fool's philosophy
Love, it's a fool's philosophy
And you must be a fool to believe in it

oh love
yeah love
umm love
you must be a fool to believe in it
love
oh yeah love
umm mmm love
you must be a fool to believe in it

love......

9. Parade

John Thomas: lyrics and music

Did they let you in?
Did they kick you out?
Did they fill you up?
Just to shut your mouth?

It's hard to grin when I'm feeling...
..so grim like cloud on a summer day
It’s not that I hate you or that I'm obsessed with death
but this day has been raining on my parade

Did they make a promise?
to believable to keep
They said they’d let you into to their world
Gave you a map to the door but no key

It's hard to grin when I'm feeling..
..so grim like a cloud on a summer day
It’s not that I hate you or that I'm obsessed with death
But this day has been rainy on my parade

Positive, she said to be positive
I like it when you smile, please smile again
But my tin cup is empty and my soul is drying up
I said to some headphones and a closed eyed smile

It's hard to grin when I'm feeling..
..so grim like a cloud on a summer day
It’s not that I hate you or that I'm obsessed with death
But this day has been rainy on my parade

It's hard to grin when I'm feeling..
..so grim like a cloud on a summer day
It’s not that I hate you or that I'm obsessed with death
But this day has been rainy on my parade

10. Dreaming Awake

John Thomas: lyrics and music

The cities asleep
but the lights are on
My mind is racing
though my bodies tired

Try closing your eyes
Or counting shepherds
Maybe pop some downers
Before you're certified

Hell no!
This is my time to breathe
My time to think
My time to dream

The miracle of moon set
Watching the fog dry
This is sensation
Straight from the bee hive

If you sleep through winter
You'll freeze to your center
So learn to celebrate
The joy of dreaming awake

Lay your head down
Shut the lights off
Take your prescription
Before you're certified

Hell no!
This is my time
This is my time
This is my time

Left brain can you're hear me?
What's that? I think you're crazy
Fingers can you feel me?
What's that? I think you're crazy!

The warm are is getting warmer
The breakdown is getting louder
I can see things
You've never thought before
Like when you let God
In through your bullet proof door

Have you tried surfing
The quality cable
Maybe taking your pills
Or a drink with the devil?

If you sleep though winter
You'll freeze to the center
So learn to celebrate
The joy of dreaming awake

Right brain can you hear me?
What's that? I think you're crazy
Fingers can you feel me?
What's that? I think you're crazy!

11. Seabound

John Thomas: lyrics and music

Have you seen the missing child
he looks a lot like me
he looks like he's from a broken heart
his hair blows in the summer breeze

have you seen the missing girl
she likes to hide her head in the ground
an ostrich with out a name
she's the seashell inside a clam

have you seen the seabound child
have you seen the seabound child
have you seen the seabound child
have you seen the seabound child

12. Salvation

John Thomas: lyrics and music

....Salvation...we need to find.. salvation

13. Redemption

John Thomas: lyrics and music

If I had my life to live over again
There is a thing or two I would do different
First I'd keep my wife, trade my ambitions for my kids
Then I'd plant a house by a hill where we would live

I never saw much money but the holiness was there
We were fanatics, spiritual addicts with backdoor to his ear
The moon falls to dark but we worshiped the son
but the son burned up years ago so I longed to be the one

Now look just what you've sacrificed
Just to become the worlds next Jesus Christ
Now look just what you've sacrificed
Just to become the worlds next Jesus Christ

We knew just what we'd done; we had done it for the son
To be held in his breath, 'till the end of 2 millennium rest
Now I can feel him in me, in my heart changing me
I can be his hands to set his people free

We’re closer to heaven now, closer then we've ever been
We’re closer to heaven now, closer then we've ever been
